Inland Sea

Inland Sea
Million on millions of years ago
This land was an inland sea
I ts here where emotions on top of this ocean
And hazed over hills to the edge of the sky
There’s the towers that grow up and over the hills
of old Saline County
They twirl and whirl and spin with a new way
A new way to harness the wind
But I can only think of the sea
And all of this beauty beneath
Thousands on thousands of years ago
The wandering of man had begun
Its here when the questions rose up to the surface
And hidden old valleys revealed a new way
There’s the fields that spread out wide with the seeds
Of an old prairie grassland
They stretch and wave and blend with a shoreline
A shoreline of dried sea floor
But I can only think of the sea
And all of this beauty beneath
As I move on over the plains
I float on over the pain
Inside of my head
On an ancient seabed
I float on over the pain
Hundreds on hundreds of years ago
This land rose up from t he sea
Its here where the movement’s within all these whispers
Of roots beneath grass from a pioneer’s dream
There’s the farms that flourish and cover the land
With waves of golden seedlings
They grow and flow with nature’s old way
Of giving back to itself
But I can only think of the sea
And all of this beauty beneath
And as I move on over the plains
I float on over the pain
Inside of my head
On an ancient seabed
I float on over the pain

Valleys Between

Valleys Between
The land’s been built up this way
In a timeless kind of living in today
with veins of mountains and valleys and valleys between
The lands been built up this way
Along this old highway, old byway, old skyway
In veins running town to town to town....
The land’s been built up this way
In a temporary course that we’ll pay for someday
in veins running city to city to city through cities and back again
The land was built up this way
but now its been stripped up for miles and miles
with no reconcile
in veins of industry’s arms
Its been developed and developed and developed again....
And these things that we build up will topple on down
For they’re built with no cautionary tale to slow down
as underground, underground always surrounds
If these things that were built up to live on and on
Are seen as the change that we need to hold on
underground, underground will rise up and sound
With the things that we build up on top of this ground
Consider what’s beating below the ground
For underground, underground movement resounds
Beneath layers upon layers upon layers...
Beneath layers upon layers upon layers... below the ground

Up Into Daylight
04:19
|

Up Into Daylight
Outside the city
And inside the country
The past moves away
Where the roots grow within
And in between
Those countryside daydreams
We migrate in ways
Of the urban machine
But when we grow wiser
We’ll move in full circle
To end in this land
That’s where we begin
Oh, oh…….
Up into daylight
And down by the timber
That grows from the river
That flows to the sea
And you and me
Will go back to the garden
Where our children are growing
Quite hastily
And when we grow older
We’ll still be together
In the heart for the land
That’s a mystery
Oh, oh…..

Learn to Love

Learn to Love
There’ll never be peace with our enemies
If we share no love, if we share no love
There’ll never be peace with the earth and sea
If we do not agree, if we do not agree
There’ll never be peace in change of mind
If we have no place, if we have no place
There’ll never be peace in hopefulness
If we have no trust, if we have no trust
Why can’t we see that love will be
All that we need all that need
Why can’t we see that love will be
All that we need to see and be
There’ll always be peace through the universe
If we learn to love, if we learn to love
There’ll always be peace inside the heart
If we learn to be, if we learn to be
There’ll always be peace in our circumstance
If we understand, if we understand
There’ll always be peace that’s unconfined
When we learn to see, when we learn to see
Why can’t we see that love will be
All that we need all that need
Why can’t we see that love will be
All that we need to see and be

Our Future Within
06:14
|
|||
Our Future Within
They try to strike fear into the heart of man
With talk of Apocalypse
They try to control all of our fate with this Word
That there is no escape
But if I had a Word that would change all their minds
I would say it again and again
If I had a way to change all the bad
I would look for the love deep inside our hearts
And if I had a way see all the good
I would share all the hope for our future within
If I had a way to open the mind
To a lifetime of peace and a lifetime of love
I would hold onto all that is good and pure
And all that is doomed and all that is not
I would look the trees and the field
To the sun and the seed
To cloud and the sea
If we think of you who are still young
If we think of you who aren’t yet born
We can change you who are without hope
We can live like you who give love for peace
I do not believe in this hopelessness
Of a so-called Apocalypse
I will not accept all this emptiness
Of meaning within these times
So when all of the world seems halfway to hell
Rethink it again and again
When sunlight’s removed by a storm overhead
I will look for a beauty beginning within
And if the end is where we begin
I would redefine hope and beauty and love
If the second coming falls from above
We’ll translate all from hatred to love
I will hold onto all that is good and pure
And all that is doomed and all that is not
I would look the trees and the field
To the sun and the seed
To cloud and the sea
If we think of you who are still young
If we think of you who aren’t yet born
We can change you who are without hope
We can live like you who give love for peace

Red Roads and Plains
05:03
|
|||
When you return to a place back home
You return to a place inside
With a wandering mind you wish
Under blue skies of painlessness
Snow fallin’ sunshine on red roads and plains
Prairie wind sunrise on southern state lines
Under blue skies we're driving as free as the wind
As power and wealth are brought from the ground

Ancient Icon
06:22
|

Ancient Icon
Headlights floating under the moonlight
Hovering over the midnight
Wandering into the daylight
Daylight’s on the edge of the night
Where shadows and light lay upon the hill
Where time, where time stands still
And Death’s there too just over the hill
Waiting, waiting one day for you
It’s a reflection of an ancient icon
Of creation in slow motion
It’s a revolution to slowly become
Nature’s own son of evolution
It’s a solution of small proportion
Of reduction to simple function
Starlight disappearing along with the moonlight
Rising up into the sunlight
Returing now to the headlights
Headlights on the edge of night

Slowed-Down In-Between

Slowed-Down In-Between
On a winter day
In the muted gold of the Flint Hills
Cattle graze
In front of a foreign farm
Its foreign to me
Cause I don’t know how it used to be
But I imagine if I did
I couldn’t live
by the heart of this speeding car
I imagine if I did
I could then live
In a patience peace of mind
In a slowed-down in-between
In the nothingness
of a town on the edge of the flint hills
Beauty prevails
in the birds of the sky and their circles
Its beauty to me
Cause I know these things are meant to be
I imagine in this world
I could soon find
a glimmer of hope in time
I imagine in this world
I could soon find
soft hearts throughout mankind
In a slowed-down in-between

Land's Low Lying Stars
03:44
|

Land’s Low Lying Stars
Through lands low lying stars
In the middle of America
Time has no motion
Life stands so still
And the color of eternity
Is reflected in the evening sky
I’m blanketed in memory
And hard-earned dreams
Stars encircle the night
In the constellations above
A full moon’s movement
Surprises me still
And the color of eternity
Is reflected in the evening sky
I’m blanketed in memory
And hard-earned dreams
Out past broken fencel

Continuously New
05:22
|

Continuously New
Continuous continuously
We live on and on
Through our fathers and mother’s souls
Continuous line of our time
Flowing steady, steady and true
We’re just people with no past, no future, no innocence
Continuously new
We’re just people with no pasts, no future, just the Present tense continuously new
And we’re wondering over the land
And pondering over our plans
For everything, everything, everything under the sun We’re just people, just people, just people
With everyday lives
We’re just people, just people, just people
Trying to survive

Small Town Hillside

Small Town Hillside
At the graveside I’m crying
For the resurrection
Of your smile in the clouds
Above old towering memories
And winding dirt roads
I’m lost in between
Twisted trees and the sky
This place that I no longer live
Will always reveal and always reheal
Reveal to my soul, reheal in my heart
The way that this old world spins
On a hillside I’m thinking
Of all of the sadness
And all of the pain
Of your small town memories
And cosmic daydreams
I’m lost in between
Twisted trees and the sky
This place that I no longer live
Will always reveal and always reheal
Reveal to my soul, reheal in my heart
The way that this old world spins
